j. barbour and sons ltd.
Everyone’s wearing Barbour these days, don’t think I haven’t noticed. Quilted jackets seem to have taken to the streets in their masses, even GIRLS are wearing them now. The look we at Popinjay have noticed more than anything else is that of preppy. The private-school elite have always seemed in a world apart from fashion, and Barbour has been a prevalent part of that separation...

"The pleasure that is in sorrow is sweeter than...
It has struck me recently that the rise in vintage has taken a new bent, and I have to say I’m very confused. The look du jour is being bandied around as “romantic floral” or “victorian chic” or “regency gothic” or whatever you want to call it, but isn’t what we’re seeing a revival of today simply another resurgence of the look that came about...

givenchy, paris couture week FW 2010 / 2011
Givenchy Couture corset and feather-bottomed gown (thanks to those lovely people at  The Love Magazine for these pictures) Anyone could have seen that couture week would see this amount of opulence, what with the rise of antique fashion and the collective desire we all suddenly share for all things pre-1950 these days (going as far back as the regency era in some trends). Just looking at...

paris couture week
Paris Couture week begins tomorrow, which means there’ll be lots of things that we here at Popinjay DEFINITELY CANNOT afford.  Expect jealous and frenetic coverage of the event over the coming days.

thom browne SS 2011 - the show that everyone was...
Thom Browne was nothing less than an absolute spectacle, in a good way. First of all - the venue. Oscar Niemeyer’s Parti Communiste HQ is a sort of weird dome like thing, with brilliant, spacey light inside.  The theme was sort of “2001: A Space Odyssey” and models all entered wearing astronaut costumes with gold visors, which they then stepped out of and hung up, revealing...

paris fashion week updates
today in my inbox i have had some wonderful notes pop through from fashion week - special mentions to Thom Browne, Lanvin, Hermés…  All of this is too much to blog right now, but tomorrow I can promise you a wealth of fashion interpretation (or fash interpretashe, for those of you in the biz.) Stay tuned…

comme des garçons, givenchy, and updates from...
So Paris has been really interesting, so far. Some of the trends I thought “Yes, that will DEFINITELY be something we’ll be seeing a lot of” have been subverted, and conversely some designers I had always loved have rather let me down. However, we’ll start with Comme des Garçons, who did not disappoint (do they ever?).  Comme des Garçons, Paris Men’s Fashion Week,...

louis vuitton, issay miyake and viktor & rolf:...
Continuing with the theme of luxury sportswear and vibrant autumnal colours, Louis Vuitton did not disappoint.  Louis Vuitton, Paris Fashion Week SS 2011 Some popular themes are running strong here, but Louis Vuitton’s use of colour is subtle and imaginitive. I especially love the cool, teal-greens used, played off against the charcoal greys, which looked breezy and dynamic, as did the...

louis vuitton fall campaign 2010
Louis Vuitton’s just-released fall campaign 2010 shows a than usual, with the the more divergent aesthetic of curvy and quirky women.  Karen Elson, Natalia Vodianova and Christy Turlington Louis Vuitton are using models with breasts, which is quite something, especially when one looks back on the androgynous, pre-pubescent, anaemic women we have seen so much of with female models; Louis...

McQ
Pina Ferlisi, former designer for Gap and Marc by Marc Jacobs and previous Creative Director for Generra, has been named as Creative Director of Alexander McQueen’s “McQ” line. Since Lee McQueen’s tragic death in February, Sarah Burton was named as Creative Director of Alexander McQueen and showcased her Pomp and Circumstance collection at Milan Men’s Fashion Week...

armani, alexander mcqueen and pringle of scotland:...
Where to begin with Armani.  Something I’ve always know about Armani is how skilled they are at a razor-sharp cut, and how the understated severity of their collections is often predictable, but rarely disappointingly so.  A few designers this year in Milan have decided to go for the masculine man look; leather, studs, chains - even (fake) tattoos have been utilised to their maximum...

milan men's fashion week SS2011 [so far]
so the last time i attended a fashion week, i caught Henry Holland’s show and slandered it mercilessly for its seemingly facile presentations of 90s retro. I had these hideous images of gym sweaters and spandex leggings in my head, and I thought “No, Henry. I think you’ve got it wrong this time”, because I simply didn’t want to believe it. Since then I’ve seen...

smalto casting [part i]
so for Paris Menswear Fashion Week SS11, Smalto had a rather novel idea of getting us, the fashion-aware public, to cast their models for them. I voted yesterday, I won’t tell you who for (though those who know me well will know who got my vote). There’s only one day left, and fittings start tomorrow morning, so have a look at these beautiful men and vote for who should walk the Smalto...

supermodel inc.
Here is Tom Nicon. He died Friday in Milan, hours before Milan Menswear Fashion Week. He was 22, and a well-known beauty and rising star in the fashion industry. Having had a fitting with Versace on Friday morning, he seemed “fine and calm”. At first, everybody said it was a terrible tragedy that he fell from his hotel apartment balcony. However, reports that he was struggling...

from fashion week [with some trepidation]
RECOVERED from http://popinjay.onsugar.com  So I thought I’d better get on and write something. Fashion week isn’t over. I’m still there. But I thought I’d better post and write about what my highlights are so far. I can tell you now - before I go on to say anything else at all - Sienna Miller was NOT a highlight of London Fashion Week.  Let’s start with Mary...

charity shop shopping
I remember when every celebrity style-icon used to shop at charity shops. It’s how I started. I used to idolise Gwen Stefani and once I read she’d gotten her clothes from thrift-stores, I never looked back. I had another reawakening recently, when I realised there was no way I could carry on buying high-street brands; not only because I couldn’t afford them, but because I stopped...
